Active Release Technique (ART) in Stony Brook, NY
Certified ART provider treating soft-tissue conditions that other methods miss
What Is Active Release Technique?
Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, evidence-based soft-tissue treatment system designed to diagnose and treat conditions involving pre/post surgical muscles, muscular imbalances, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. It is the gold standard for resolving injuries caused by overuse, repetitive strain, and accumulated soft-tissue dysfunction.
ART works by breaking down dense scar tissue and adhesions that form in overused or injured soft tissue. These adhesions restrict movement, cause pain, and compromise nerve function. A certified ART provider uses precise, hands-on protocols to locate and release them with targeted tension and movement.

What Our Patients Say
I had suffered from chronic headaches for three years and had tried everything. After just four ART sessions targeting the muscles in my neck and upper back, the frequency dropped by more than half. I had no idea that soft-tissue adhesions were the underlying cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions does ART treat?
ART is effective for a wide range of soft-tissue conditions including headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, sciatica, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, tennis elbow, muscular imbalance, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
How many ART sessions will I need?
Many patients experience significant relief within 3 to 6 sessions. ART is designed for rapid results -- conditions that have persisted for months often respond within a short course of treatment.
Does ART hurt?
ART can produce mild discomfort during treatment as adhesions are broken down, but this is generally well-tolerated and brief. Most patients describe a 'good pain' sensation. Post-treatment soreness lasting 24 to 48 hours is common and normal.
Is ART covered by insurance?
ART is typically billed as manual therapy or soft-tissue mobilization, which is covered by most major insurance plans. We recommend confirming your specific benefits before your first visit.
How is ART different from massage therapy?
ART is a clinical diagnostic and treatment system, not a wellness modality. Each ART session involves precise evaluation of which tissues are involved, specific protocols targeting those structures, and active patient movement throughout treatment. The goal is targeted resolution of a clinical condition.
